Wedding photography and films in the Lake District

The Lake District is one of those special places I always find myself drawn to. Part of our honeymoon was spent here, and Verity and I have been back every year since for our anniversary, not to mention weddings, engagement shoots and day trips.

I’ve photographed lakeside weddings on Windermere, including Lucy and Dan’s boat trip and sunset at Storrs Hall. At Silverholme Manor, Katie and Richard’s day was wonderfully rainy, and Jess and Mark married by the lake in the sunshine. I love a countryside celebration too, like Sarah and Bren’s wedding in a remote Lake District village, with guests who had travelled from across the world.

Cumbria is a couple of hours from my home in Wharfedale, and travel and accommodation are included in every collection.

Lake District wedding venues

Storrs Hall is a Grade II* listed Georgian hotel on the shore of Windermere, about two miles south of Bowness. It has licensed ceremony spaces indoors and out and lawns running down to the water. At the end of a stone jetty stands the Temple of Heroes, an octagonal folly built in 1804. Lucy and Dan married in the Garden Pavilion with the lake behind them.

Silverholme Manor is a private Georgian house on the quieter western shore, within the 5,000-acre Graythwaite Estate. It’s booked as a house for three nights, with civil ceremonies in the manor or its Coach House and room for celebrations of up to 200. The Graythwaite Estate still offers it for weddings, and it’s hard to beat anywhere in the UK.

A Lake District wedding day

The best portraits here usually come from the water’s edge. Jetties at both venues give you the lake and the fells in one frame, and the Temple’s stone arches glow as the sun goes down. At Silverholme, the woods were full of foxgloves for Katie and Richard. Lucy and Dan even took all their guests out on the lake.

The Lakes have their own weather: the national park’s figures put Ambleside’s rainfall at more than two metres a year. So it’s worth planning a wet-weather version of the day, and big umbrellas at the end of a misty jetty can be every bit as beautiful as sunshine.

Away from the venues, the fells are perfect for engagement and adventure shoots. I’ve taken couples across the stepping stones of a hidden cave in the fells, as with Christina and Paul and Jadlyn and Moses. Others have been on windswept hilltops with Domi and Matt and by still, grey water with Lily and Khayam. Sarah and Bren’s engagement shoot took us to a location that even earned Verity an honourable mention in Junebug Weddings’ Best of the Best Engagements.

Why couples choose the Lake District

  • Water everywhere. Lakeside venues mean jetties, reflections and even boat trips, right on the doorstep.
  • A real sense of place. It’s England’s largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and every photograph shows where you were.
  • Weather that adds drama. Mist, cloud and low sun all look beautiful here, and rain just means umbrellas.
  • A weekend, not just a day. Storrs Hall and Silverholme both have rooms for guests, and the lakes and fells are there to explore the morning after.

Questions couples ask

Which Lake District venues have you photographed?

Storrs Hall and Silverholme Manor on Windermere, among others, as well as village weddings like Sarah and Bren’s. Each venue has its own page with photos from real weddings.

How much does a Lake District wedding photographer cost?

My full-day photography collection is £1,750 and full-day film is £1,500. Travel and accommodation within England are included, so there’s no extra charge for the Lakes. See prices for what’s included.

Do you offer engagement or adventure shoots in the Lakes?

Yes. An adventure session is two to three hours at a location of your choice, with 40 to 50 edited photographs. Get in touch through my contact page for dates.

Do you film weddings in the Lake District as well?

Yes. Films can be booked on their own or alongside photography, planned together as one story: see my wedding videography. Planning further east? See my Newcastle and Yorkshire pages.
