York Maze Wedding Photographer
Bunting, barns and a jumping pillow: the relaxed farm weddings I photographed on the edge of York.
Photographing weddings at York Maze
York Maze is a farm attraction on Elvington Lane, about ten minutes from the centre of York. Every summer a new maze is cut into a field of maize, and for a number of years, outside the maze season, the farm also hosted weddings in its barns. They had a fun, festival feel that’s hard to match.
I photographed two weddings there. Gemma and Richard’s was the epitome of everything I love about wedding photography. The flowers were arranged by Gemma’s aunt as part of a final college project, and friends and family spent the whole Friday getting the venue ready. Emily and David’s had dogs, belly laughs and one of the most honest lines I’ve heard in a speech: “I don’t know why, I just DO!”
The maze still opens every summer, but it no longer appears on the City of York’s register of approved ceremony venues, and I can’t find any sign of weddings there in recent years. If you love the idea, ask the maze directly what it offers now.

About York Maze
Farmer Tom Pearcy opened the first York Maze in 2002 and moved it to its current site on Elvington Lane in 2008. Each year a new design is cut into a 15-acre field of more than a million maize plants, and it’s billed as the largest maize maze in Europe. Past designs have included Toy Story, Star Wars and Doctor Who, and the 2026 maze celebrated Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday. The main season runs from mid-July to early September.

What a York Maze wedding was like
Emily and David’s ceremony was in a timber barn hung with bunting, with plenty of laughter during the vows. Outside there were red-brick barns, an old cartwheel and gravel yards for portraits, and so many places to explore that we were spoilt for choice.
Then there was the play equipment. Richard’s groomsmen climbed a climbing frame for their group shot all on their own, and Emily and David’s wedding party kicked off their shoes and leapt about on a giant jumping pillow. Emily and David’s speeches were in a brick barn strung with bunting and hearts, and my last photographs of Gemma and Richard were of them wrapped in blankets beside a fire outside the tipi where they were staying.
Looking for that relaxed feel near York?
If York Maze weddings are what you had in mind, here’s where I’d look now:
- Farm barns. Barmbyfield Barn, east of York, is a blank canvas of brick and timber with fields all around.
- A family farm. The Normans at Bilbrough has a licensed ceremony barn and a courtyard for drinks.
- Your own field. A marquee wedding lets you bring the festival feel anywhere you like.
- More ideas. Browse all my York wedding photography for venues in and around the city.
