Photographing weddings at The Normans
The Normans is a family farm at Bilbrough, near Tadcaster and just off the A64, about twenty minutes from York and thirty-five from Leeds. Three generations of the Robinson family have married here, and Oliver and Laura Robinson, who married on the farm in 2014, have since turned its old buildings and fold yard into a wedding venue.
It’s a blank canvas of a place: brick barns, a courtyard and farmland you can style however you like. The photographs on this page are from a ceremony in the old threshing barn, with a curtain of fairy lights glowing against the brickwork behind the couple and every guest turned towards them.
It’s in my top ten Yorkshire wedding venues for good reason, and it’s an easy drive from my home in Wharfedale, so I’m there from the start of the morning.
About The Normans
The farmhouse and its adjoining barns are Grade II listed. The house is mostly late 18th century with earlier origins, and the oldest barn dates from the 17th century. Each building has a job on the day: welcome drinks in the Stables Bar, the ceremony in the Ceremony Barn, canapés in the south-facing courtyard, and dinner and dancing in the Grain Shed. Wheat and barley were once stored there at harvest. The old Cow Stalls and Tack Room make snug spaces for guests to sit and talk.
The Ceremony Barn is licensed for civil ceremonies, and an outdoor ceremony is possible too. You have the whole farm to yourselves, with food from the venue’s exclusive caterer, and the Cottage and the Granary on site sleep ten between them.
A wedding day at The Normans
With rooms on the farm, the morning can start right here. The Ceremony Barn is the heart of the day: old brick, a high timber roof and soft light, so the vows feel close and personal however many guests you have.
Afterwards everyone spills out into the courtyard, and there’s plenty of room for relaxed portraits around the farm buildings and out towards the fields. Later, the Grain Shed takes care of dinner and the party. As it gets dark I like to steal the two of you away for a few minutes for a night portrait, a single light picking you out against the black countryside.
