A Georgian estate near Richmond where a wedding often becomes a whole weekend.
Photographing weddings at Middleton Lodge
Middleton Lodge is a Georgian country estate at Middleton Tyas, near Richmond in North Yorkshire and five minutes from Scotch Corner. The house was designed by John Carr, and it sits on a 200-acre estate with walled gardens, a restaurant, a spa and bedrooms dotted all around. It’s the kind of place where a wedding easily becomes a whole weekend.
I’ve photographed weddings here on several occasions over the years. Ben and Amina’s Middleton Lodge wedding mixed elegant Georgian rooms with portraits among old estate buildings that were still being restored. Izzy and Ben’s September wedding was a highlight of its year, and one that moved me deeply.
Travel is included in every collection, so I’m there from the start of the morning.

About Middleton Lodge
The house was built between 1777 and 1780 for George Hartley, to designs by the architect John Carr, and it’s Grade II* listed. The Allison family have owned it since 1980, and James Allison turned it into a wedding and events venue, adding a marquee for larger celebrations.
Since then the estate has grown a great deal. The Coach House opened as a restaurant with rooms in 2014, and the old walled kitchen garden was restored with the garden designer Tom Stuart-Smith. The Fig House, built around an old brick archway, became a second wedding space, and the Forest Spa followed in 2023.
There are two main settings. In the Main House you can marry in the Drawing Room or the Main Hall, each seating up to 75. Dinner is in the garden marquee, for up to 160. In the walled garden, the Fig House seats up to 160 for a ceremony and 120 for dinner. Either way the evening can grow to 200, and you can book both for a bigger celebration.

A wedding day at Middleton Lodge
Mornings in the Main House are full of window light and elegant rooms. At Ben and Amina’s wedding the dress hung beneath a chandelier, and the men read the papers on a leather sofa. A library with a snooker table kept the groomsmen busy. Amina was helped into her dress beside the fireplace.
Ceremonies feel close and personal. At Izzy and Ben’s church ceremony, the two of them only had eyes for each other, and at Ben and Amina’s there were happy tears among the bridesmaids. Every couple’s story is theirs to tell, but it’s all there in the photographs. Two people, madly in love, sharing one of the most significant days of their lives.
For portraits there’s parkland, the walled garden and plenty of texture within a short walk. In the evening the marquee comes alive, and Izzy and Ben’s speeches left at least one guest helpless with laughter.
