Photographing weddings at Falcon Manor
Falcon Manor is a country-house hotel in Settle, the market town on the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales. It was built in 1841, and its gabled stone front, terrace and gardens look out over the hills, so even on a grey day the photographs have a real sense of place.
My first wedding here was Holly and Mark’s, when the manor was still fairly new to weddings. Holly’s brother was Mark’s best man, which suited a day that was all about family and friends, with guests travelling from all over the UK. Settle is an easy drive from my home in Wharfedale, and travel is included in every collection, so I’m there from the start of the morning.
About Falcon Manor
Falcon Manor is licensed for civil ceremonies, so you can marry and celebrate in one place. You can choose the Garden Room, which looks out over the terrace, or an outdoor pavilion for warmer days. Both take up to 85 guests, and the evening can grow to around 150.
There are 16 bedrooms, including the Rafters Suite, so your closest family can stay the night. And the Dales are right on the doorstep: the limestone country begins at the edge of town if you’d like portraits with a bigger view.
A wedding day at Falcon Manor
Mornings here are relaxed. The bedrooms have lovely window light for getting ready, and there’s space for the dress, the details and the people who matter to be photographed without anyone feeling crowded.
For Holly and Mark’s ceremony the guests gathered indoors under the lanterns, which made it feel close and personal. Afterwards everyone spilled out onto the lawns, with garden games and giant LOVE letters on the grass.
My favourite portraits came from stepping back across the lawn, with the manor’s gables and chimneys behind the two of them and the Dales sky above. It takes five minutes, and it tells you exactly where you were.
