Photographing weddings at Taitlands

Taitlands is a Grade II listed house beside the village of Stainforth, just north of Settle, inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It was built in the 1840s for Thomas Joseph Redmayne in the Greek Revival style, with an entrance portico on four fluted Ionic columns and a cast-iron balcony above.

For much of the last century it was a youth hostel, from 1942 until 2007, and it has since been used as a wedding venue. It isn’t on North Yorkshire Council’s current list of approved ceremony venues, and I couldn’t confirm that it’s still taking weddings, so please check with the owners before you plan around it.

I haven’t shared a wedding from Taitlands on my journal yet, but I know this corner of the Dales well. I photographed Holly and Mark’s wedding at Falcon Manor in Settle, and I’d love to photograph or film yours nearby.

About Taitlands

Inside, the entrance hall has paired wooden Ionic columns and a decorated plaster ceiling. In the garden there’s an old sundial base inscribed “TR 1840”, and each driveway entrance has a pair of stone gatepiers linked by a curved wall.

As a wedding venue, Taitlands has offered a choice of two rooms in the house for the ceremony, with the reception in the Coach House or in a marquee in the grounds. It has also offered up to seven bedrooms for the wedding party, including a bridal suite.

From my Yorkshire weddings

I haven’t shared a wedding from Taitlands on the journal yet, so these are a few favourites from weddings elsewhere in Yorkshire.

A Dales wedding day near Stainforth

Stainforth itself is lovely for photographs. A short walk from the village, Stainforth Force drops over limestone ledges into a deep, broad pool, and a packhorse bridge from the 1670s arches over a wooded stretch of the river.

Weddings in this part of the Dales are all about the landscape and the sky. At Falcon Manor, some of my favourite portraits of Holly and Mark came from a few minutes in a mown field under a huge grey sky. An old stone barn and a single tree stood on the skyline. Big skies, stone walls and changeable weather are part of the charm, so I always plan a little time to step outside, whatever the forecast.

Why couples chose Taitlands

  • A house with real character. A Greek Revival portico, a cast-iron balcony and a decorated ceiling in the hall.
  • Room for a marquee. Receptions have been held in the Coach House or in a marquee in the grounds.
  • Your people under one roof. The house has offered bedrooms for the wedding party, including a bridal suite.
  • The Dales on the doorstep. A waterfall, a packhorse bridge and limestone country a short walk from the village.
