Photographing weddings at Cracoe Village Hall

Cracoe Village Hall, in the Dales a short drive from Skipton, is one of my more unlikely favourite venues. It’s exactly what a village hall wedding should be: relaxed, personal and surrounded by some of the best scenery in Yorkshire.

It has a special place in my heart, too. On Isobel and James’s wedding day, Isobel got ready at the Angel Inn in nearby Hetton, the same place Verity and I had found our cat, Angel, a few years before.

The Dales are home for me, and travel is included in every collection, so I’m there from the first nervous moments of your morning.

About Cracoe and its village hall

Cracoe is a small village in the Yorkshire Dales, about five and a half miles north-west of Skipton and six miles south-west of Grassington. Rylstone Cross and Cracoe Pinnacle stand on the skyline above it, and the rounded hills nearby, the Cracoe Reef Knolls, are the remains of an ancient coral reef. It was also home to the original Calendar Girls.

The hall is run by a local charity for the surrounding villages: Rylstone, Hetton-cum-Bordley, Cracoe, Flasby and Winterburn. It isn’t on North Yorkshire Council’s list of approved ceremony venues, so talk to the hall and the registrars early about where your legal ceremony will take place.

A wedding day at Cracoe Village Hall

Isobel and James’s day started early. Isobel had emailed me at 2.45 in the morning, and when I caught up with James he told me he’d barely slept either. There was something lovely about the two of them, apart for the night but sharing the same nervous excitement.

High winds meant a marquee went up for the ceremony, and we all knew how much an outdoor ceremony meant to Isobel. So it felt pretty special when the weather picked up in time to open the marquee up. Inside, there was bunting overhead, a rustic arch of branches, and plenty of laughter.

Afterwards there were garden games by the drystone wall. Then we asked Isobel and James to climb a hill we could see from the hall’s grounds. It looked small from below, but halfway up it felt like a mountain, and Isobel powered up it in high heels. The view across the Dales, with her hair blowing in the wind, was worth every step.

Back in the hall, under bunting and paper stars, the speeches were full of laughter.

Why couples choose Cracoe Village Hall

  • Relaxed and personal. A village hall wedding feels like a big family party, not a production.
  • The Dales all around. Hills, drystone walls and big views are right outside the door.
  • Room to make it yours. Isobel and James added a marquee, bunting and garden games, and the day felt completely theirs.
  • Good places to stay nearby. Isobel got ready at the Angel Inn in Hetton, just up the road from the hall.
