Even in just 5 years of being in the wedding industry we have seen a vast change in the ‘norm’ when it comes to weddings. From traditions and running orders to locations, it seems that more couples than ever before are choosing to do something a little different when it comes to their day. The best thing about that for us is the individuality that it brings, all of the choices and decisions combined to create a day that really represents the two people at the centre of it all.
Mekhala and Gareth are a great example of this, although they did have a considerable advantage over most couples; between ceremonies and blessings their Barmbyfield Barns Wedding – organised by the lovely Ellen of LND Events – was actually their FIFTH wedding! As such by the time December rolled around Mekhala and Gareth knew exactly what they wanted for their York wedding. Having already participated in multiple ceremonies the traditional ‘ceremony’ was skipped and instead they played a slideshow of videos and images from their celebration in India for their guests.
When we first met Mekhala and Gareth they explained that Barmbyfield Barns’ was the perfect setting for what they had planned. They wanted somewhere they could fill with ideas of their own, creating a venue that really represented them as a couple and most of all somewhere to have an epic party with all of their guests who weren’t able to make it to India. They certainly succeeded on all counts, their day was the kind of unique day that was really centered around everyone having a great time.
We especially loved the way Mekhala and Gareth’s day really did feel like a whole day of celebration, not at all dictated by tradition – whenever we find out we’re shooting a bride and groom getting ready in the same room we know it’s going to be a winner!
As the day unfolded it was clear to see just why the day was planned how it was. We always call couples like Gareth and Mekhala ‘Magnetic couples’, the kind of couple who people love being around, who people just gravitate towards. Whether it’s in a different continent, with friends and family travelling thousands of miles to be there, or closer to home when it’s impossible to pick out a non-smiling face during the reception.
Every time we leave a wedding it’s with a certain sense of sadness, that the photography side of our job is done, but it always makes us that much more thankful for the career we both have, and more importantly, thankful for the incredible couples who make it such an incredible career to have.
