Fi & Jonny’s Relaxed Yorkshire Dales Wedding

I’ll admit it: this is the kind of wedding I hope for every time I pick up my camera.

Fi and Jonny got married in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, with a ceremony in a beautiful church and a celebration at a family home. There was no stiffness and no checklist of poses, just two people who clearly love each other, surrounded by their favourite people in a place that means a lot to them.

As a Yorkshire wedding photographer, days like this remind me why I love the job.

The Church

The church was lovely. It had that quiet, lived-in feeling you only get from old stone buildings that have seen generations of weddings, christenings and Sunday mornings.

I always try to stay out of the way during a ceremony, and here that was easy. Everyone was relaxed, and the whole room felt warm. Jonny looked calm and happy in his morning suit, and Fi was stunning in her off-the-shoulder satin gown, with a long sweeping train and a soft veil. Those are the moments I’m looking for: the look between two people, the deep breath, the smile that appears without anyone asking for it.

Portraits in the Dales

After the ceremony, I borrowed Fi and Jonny for a few minutes to wander up into the fields. I’m so glad we did.

The view was incredible: rolling hills, patchwork fields, a stone barn with a slate roof tucked into the hillside, and long golden grass that caught every bit of light. The sky was soft and overcast, which I love for portraits. It gives you gentle, flattering light and a calm, painterly feel that suits the Dales perfectly.

Fi’s bouquet was gorgeous against the landscape, a loose, garden-style mix of blush roses, cream dahlias, soft blue delphinium and wildflowers, finished with trailing silk ribbon. It looked like it had been picked from the hedgerow that morning, in the best possible way.

My favourite frame from the day is the one at the top of this post. I didn’t direct it. I just asked them to stand together and enjoy the view, and they did what comes naturally: they looked at each other and smiled. That’s the whole photo.

Back to the Family Home

The rest of the day took place at a family home, and it showed. There’s something special about a wedding at someone’s home. It feels personal in a way a formal venue can’t quite match. Guests drift between conversations, the pace stays easy, and the day belongs to the couple and their family rather than to a schedule.

I love photographing days like this because there’s so much to capture: the hugs, the laughter, the quiet moments in between. Nothing is staged, and everything is real.

Why I Love Photographing Weddings in the Yorkshire Dales

If you’re planning a Yorkshire Dales wedding, here’s why I think it’s one of the best places in the country:

  • The scenery does the heavy lifting. Hills, dry stone walls, meadows and woodland make every portrait feel timeless.
  • The buildings have character. Honey-coloured stone churches, barns and farmhouses add texture and history to your photos.
  • It works in any weather. Soft summer light, dramatic skies and misty mornings all look beautiful here.
  • It feels like a proper escape. You get space to slow down and enjoy your day.

My Approach to Relaxed Wedding Photography in Yorkshire

I’m not a fan of stiff, over-posed photos. I’d rather give you a little direction when you need it, then step back and let the day happen. I keep it natural and relaxed, and I focus on the real moments: the nervous laughs, the whispered jokes, the hugs that go on a bit longer than planned.

That’s how I photographed Fi and Jonny’s day, and I think the pictures show how it felt.
