Photographing weddings at Leeds Cathedral

Leeds Cathedral, the Cathedral Church of St Anne, is the Catholic cathedral for Leeds, on the corner of Cookridge Street and Great George Street in the city centre. It was built between 1902 and 1904 to designs by J.H. Eastwood with S.K. Greenslade, and it’s Grade II* listed. It’s also unusual: the only cathedral in England built in the Arts and Crafts Gothic style.

My first wedding here was Neha and Paul’s Leeds Cathedral wedding, at the start of a very busy August. After eight years of living in Leeds I’d never even stepped inside, and it was hard not to be blown away. Working from the front, under that high ceiling, gave me the chance to be really creative. Their day carried on with a Hindu ceremony in the afternoon: two weddings in one day.

Leeds is on my doorstep, and travel is included in every collection. You can see more of my Leeds wedding photography here.

About Leeds Cathedral

The cathedral opened in 1904 and was consecrated in 1924. It reopened in November 2006 after a major reordering, and the following year the high altar and reredos by A.W.N. Pugin, brought from the earlier church, were conserved and restored. Delicate patterned glass was installed in 1931.

Because it’s right in the city centre, it pairs easily with a reception in Leeds. For a photographer the scale is the gift: a high ceiling, impressive architecture and a wealth of detail in the stone and wood, with far more light inside than you might expect.

A wedding day at Leeds Cathedral

Neha and Paul’s morning started early, with gold shoes waiting by the window and Neha reflected in a mirror, a jewelled comb in her hair. At the cathedral, the building gave the ceremony a real sense of occasion, and from the front I could photograph their faces as well as the space around them.

In the afternoon the day changed completely, with a Hindu ceremony full of colour at The Met Hotel across the city centre. If you’re planning a church ceremony followed by a reception, or a second ceremony elsewhere, I’m happy to help you plan timings that give you room to breathe.

Why couples choose Leeds Cathedral

  • A real sense of occasion. A cathedral ceremony feels grand without feeling cold, and the light inside is lovely for photographs.
  • Arts and Crafts detail. The only English cathedral in the Arts and Crafts Gothic style, with Pugin’s altar and reredos at its heart.
  • In the heart of the city. It’s easy for guests to reach and close to receptions across Leeds. See more city weddings.
  • Pairs with country venues too. Couples can head out after the ceremony to venues such as Oakwell Hall or Woodlands on the edge of the city.

On the corner of Cookridge Street and Great George Street in Leeds city centre. It’s the Catholic cathedral for Leeds, dedicated to St Anne.

Can you photograph the ceremony inside Leeds Cathedral?

At Neha and Paul’s wedding I was able to work from the front of the cathedral. Every church has its own approach, and things can change, so I always check with the priest beforehand and work quietly.

How much does a Leeds Cathedral wedding photographer cost?

My full-day photography collection is £1,750 and full-day film is £1,500, with travel and accommodation included. See prices for what’s included.

Do you film weddings at Leeds Cathedral?

Yes, where the cathedral allows it, on their own or alongside photography. See my Yorkshire wedding videography.
