Photographing weddings at Ilkley Winter Gardens
The King’s Hall and Winter Garden is one of those little-known Yorkshire venues I absolutely love. It stands on Station Road in the centre of Ilkley, directly opposite the train and bus station, and it’s still a working theatre and events venue, run by Bradford Theatres.
Stella and Dom’s New Year’s Eve wedding here was one of my first Ilkley weddings and remains a favourite. There was a black tie dress code, lots of dancing, and confetti coming down as the clocks struck midnight.
Ilkley is a short drive from my home in Wharfedale, so I know the town and its light well. See my Ilkley wedding photography page for other venues nearby, including the Tithe Barn at Bolton Abbey.

About the King’s Hall and Winter Garden
The King’s Hall opened in April 1908 alongside Ilkley’s town hall, designed by the Leeds architect William Bakewell. The Winter Garden followed in June 1914, with a glass canopy, a lantern roof, a balcony and a sprung wooden floor. It became a popular place for concerts, meetings and dances, and today it hosts weddings and celebrations.
Both spaces are licensed for civil ceremonies. The King’s Hall seats up to 240 for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, with room for more guests in the evening, a late licence and space for live music. The Winter Garden seats up to 120 on its ground floor, with drinks on the curved balcony, a fully licensed bar and a sweeping staircase made for a grand entrance.

A wedding day at Ilkley Winter Gardens
It’s a venue that doesn’t rely on the weather, which is always a plus for a winter wedding. Daylight pours in through the glass roof for as long as it lasts, and once it’s dark the whole place feels warm and full of atmosphere.
For Stella and Dom, that meant a black tie celebration that built all evening towards midnight. From the moment we started shooting, everything seemed to fall into place: the people, the atmosphere, the dancing and the expressions. As the confetti fell, we barely had time to do anything except shoot.
For portraits, the staircase and the balcony give you something special without stepping outside. If the weather is kind, the Riverside Gardens and the Cow and Calf rocks on Ilkley Moor are a short drive away.
Why couples choose Ilkley Winter Gardens
- Whatever the weather. Ceremony, meal and party can all happen under one roof, which makes it ideal for winter weddings.
- Two very different spaces. The King’s Hall for a bigger wedding, or the light-filled Winter Garden for something more intimate.
- Easy for guests. It’s directly opposite Ilkley station, so plenty of people can arrive by train or bus.
- A grand entrance. The sweeping staircase and the curved balcony look wonderful in photos.
