Photographing weddings at Hackness Grange
Hackness Grange is a country house hotel in Hackness, a short drive inland from Scarborough and inside the North York Moors National Park. It stands at the head of Forge Valley, with 17 acres of gardens and lawns and woodland all around. There’s even a lake, with a little pavilion on an island. It’s a lovely setting for a relaxed country wedding with the coast close by.
Craig and Maggie’s wedding here was a wonderful example. When I put together a list of my favourite Yorkshire venues, I called Hackness the perfect blend of everything. It’s flexible enough for small or large weddings, with plenty of interest inside and out, and close enough to the coast for some epic seaside portraits.

About Hackness Grange
The house was built in the mid-19th century for the Johnstone family and extended later in the century. It’s Grade II listed, with classical details and a wrought-iron staircase balustrade. Today it’s a country house hotel with 26 guest rooms and a honeymoon suite.
Ceremonies can be held indoors in the Elizabeth Suite, for up to 120 guests, or in the smaller Derwent Suite, for up to 60. You can also marry outdoors in the Pavilion, on a private island in the lake, reached by a footbridge. It seats 80, with room for 40 more standing. The Elizabeth Suite then hosts dinner for up to 120 and an evening party for up to 170.
A wedding day at Hackness Grange
Craig and Maggie married in church, and the island came into its own at their reception here. A footbridge strung with festoon lights leads across the lake to a little wooden pavilion. As the light softened they wandered over with drinks in hand, stopping for a kiss on the bridge with the lawns and wooded hills behind them.
Around the house there are lawns, big old trees and wooded hillsides, so portraits can feel completely private without going far. And if you’d like to finish with fireworks, the hotel allows them by prior arrangement.
And when the light is right, the coast is close enough to capture some epic coastal landscapes without too much trouble. Wide sands, rock pools and big skies are only a short drive away. When I worked there, I knew from the moment I arrived that everything was in safe hands with a seasoned team.
